The effects of heat on your roof

Most of us have a love-hate relationship with the Ghana sun, and the house roof is no different. Although we can’t do anything about the weather, we can become more informed of how the weather affects us. By knowing how the heat can affect the roof, you will be able to make more informed and better decisions when it comes to maintenance.

How heat impacts your roof

Constant exposure to the sun will increase your roof, making the air conditioning system work harder to cool the home. Intense or prolonged heat can cause wood roof rafters, support beams, joists, and decking to expand, stretch, and crack. We also occasionally see shingles start to curl and shrink. When the roofing system is weakened in this way, you’re more likely to see urgent issues like leaks, mould, and mildew.

Prevent roof damage and protect your house

There are a few steps you can take to protect your house and roof against the heat.

Roofing Ventilation: Proper ventilation can reduce the effects of heat and humidity.

Dehumidifiers: Using a dehumidifier in your attic space can prevent molds caused by condensation. And, minimising moisture will reduce the air’s heat capacity.

Preventative Maintenance: It is best to be proactive and have your roof checked after major weather events. That way, you’ll know issues early and save costly repairs down the line.
