What to do if your roof is leaking?

Leaking roof is never a pleasant story. Your home is that one place where you should feel safe and protected. Unfortunately, outside elements like rain can creep their way into your house. Given how much is at stake if you do not take care of a leaky roof, it only makes sense to take action as soon as you notice it.

Where do you start?

Push Furniture Aside

The moment you notice a leak, make sure you move aside all furniture that may be in the way. The last thing you need is to ruin your belongings in the process. This is especially true because the excess water can cause damage to wooden furniture and mildew on fabrics.

Keep Water Contained

The next thing you want to keep safe is the floor. Water dripping from the leaky roof can cause warping and may lead to a costly repair later. Grab buckets, garbage cans, towels, and anything else you can find to capture the water to reduce the impact and damage the rain water can cause.

Cover the Roof

If for some reason, you can’t get the leaking roof fixed right away, it can be helpful to at least cover the hole on the roof with a tarp. Make sure to get one that is thick enough to withstand being outside and get one that extends well past the problem area. This won’t be a permanent solution but it should be enough to reduce the water damage in at home while you wait for a professional to come by.
